Historically significant nuclear explosions

The "Atomic Age" of nuclear weaponry has been a defining feature of global politics since the mid-1940s. Over this time, the USA, USSR, & France have conducted nearly 2,000 nuclear explosion tests between them. These include atmospheric, underwater, and underground detonations in some of the most remote areas of the world known to man. At the peak of the nuclear arms race, the two superpowers of the USA & the USSR had around 60,000 warheads combined between them, enough to destroy modern civilization as we know it. Now as time goes on, gradually more countries join the list of those with nuclear capabilities, the most recent of which was North Korea in 2006. Out of this long history of detonations, I have outlined the historically most significant events below...

Art of the Steal: On the Trail of World’s Most Ingenious Thief

The plane slowed and leveled out about a mile aboveground. Up ahead, the Viennese castle glowed like a fairy tale palace. When the pilot gave the thumbs-up, Gerald Blanchard looked down, checked his parachute straps, and jumped into the darkness. He plummeted for a second, then pulled his cord, slowing to a nice descent toward the tiled roof. It was early June 1998, and the evening wind was warm. If it kept cooperating, Blanchard would touch down directly above the room that held the Koechert Diamond Pearl. He steered his parachute toward his target.

Sandstorm in China: Orange Haze Covers Beijing

There were few people out on streets where pedestrians could taste the dust. Many of those who had ventured from their homes were wearing facemasks, and some left footprints in the yellow film that had settled on the city's streets.

Beijing's weather forecasting bureau gave the air quality a rare "5," or hazardous, rating and added that it was "not suitable for morning exercises." Parks and open spaces are usually packed from early in the day with enthusiasts doing martial arts, ballroom dancing and other activities.

The sandstorms underline the environmental degradation investors identify as one of the long-term constraints on growth in China, and concern about its impact has made a less resource-intensive model of growth a priority for Beijing.

The government has spent millions of dollars on projects to rein in the spread of deserts, planting trees and trying to protect what plant cover remains in marginal areas.

But the battle is being fought against a backdrop of rising average temperatures and increasing pressure on water resources after three decades of booming growth.

The sandstorm hit Beijing around midnight, carrying huge amounts of dust and heading south east, the official Xinhua news agency said. In northern Changping district, the wind reached speeds of up to 100 km per hour (60 mph).

The swirling clouds of dust and sand had blanketed the interior provinces of Qinghai and Gansu, and western Xinjiang region, before sweeping over the capital, Xinhua said.

Just Picked Up The Sony VRD-MC6 DVDirect DVD recorder!

Sony today debuted its next-generation multi-function DVDirect(TM) DVD recorder, which can transfer both high-definition and standard-definition home videos and digital photos to DVD discs without using a computer. The new VRD-MC6 model has a 2.7-inch color LCD screen for previewing video or up to six digital photos at a time, and its overall size is almost 60 percent smaller than its predecessor.

"Many customers still have their old home movies on tapes and are looking for an easy solution to archive their personal digital imaging content on DVD discs. With the larger built-in LCD color screen in a smaller body, the new DVDirect model makes it easier for customers to transfer the content to DVD discs for archiving, enjoying and sharing with family and friends," said Shige Nakayama, manager of the DVDirect business at Sony.

The VRD-MC6 can transfer AVCHD(TM) quality videos to DVD discs in their native 1080i HD resolution when connected directly to a Sony hard drive or Memory Stick(R) media-based Handycam(R) camcorder. AVCHD quality DVDs can be played back on compatible Blu-ray Disc(TM) devices, including players and computer drives, as well as PlayStation(R) 3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment systems.

It can also transfer standard-definition home videos to DVD discs without the need of a computer from virtually any camcorder, VCR or digital video recorder. The new model includes Digital Video (i.LINK(R)/FireWire(R)/IEEE-1394), Composite Video inputs, and USB (for Sony hard drive, DVD and Memory Stick media-based Handycam camcorders). DVD video discs recorded in this manner are playable in most consumer DVD players.

In addition, the VRD-MC6 can directly record digital photos to a DVD as a slideshow or just for photo storage from any of the four popular digital camera memory cards. It supports slots for Memory Stick(R), Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Duo(TM) and Memory Stick Pro Duo media, Secure Digital (SD(TM)/SDHC(TM)) and xD-picture card(TM) media, or via USB from Sony hard drive, DVD and Memory Stick media based Handycam camcorders. Users can also import their own MP3 music files to serve as background music.

With automatic DVD menu and title creation, the new model offers four preset menu backgrounds along with the ability to import JPEG images to serve as the DVD menu background: automatic DVD chaptering every five, 10 or 15 minutes; and stop-timer recording.

Up to six hours of standard-definition video, up to 95 minutes of AVCHD video or up to 2,000 digital pictures can be recorded on a 4.7GB DVD+R/+RW disc. Over 10 hours of standard definition video can be recorded on 8.5GB DVD+R double layer discs which are compatible when using the DV or Composite video inputs only. The new DVDirect model maintains Dolby Digital(R) 5.1 surround sound, as well as 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios with compatible camcorders.

Your chair is your enemy.

It doesn’t matter if you go running every morning, or you’re a regular at the gym. If you spend most of the rest of the day sitting — in your car, your office chair, on your sofa at home — you are putting yourself at increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, a variety of cancers and an early death. In other words, irrespective of whether you exercise vigorously, sitting for long periods is bad for you.

The Evolutionary Reason for Depression

If depression has an evolutionary purpose, it's certainly not obvious. Depression makes people consider suicide and less interested in sex, which does not encourage the species' survival. But two evolutionary psychologists theorize that depression's purpose is enhanced mental skills.
